About This Tool

So, you're thinking about starting a garden? Cool. I’ve been there—excited, a little overwhelmed, and definitely not sure how much space I actually need. That’s why I built the Grow A Garden Calculator. It’s not fancy. No animations, no pop-ups, just a simple tool that helps you figure out how many plants you can realistically grow in your space. I made it because I kept overplanting. My first garden looked like a jungle by week three. Lettuce drowning in tomato vines. Peppers fighting for sunlight. Not ideal. This calculator takes your garden size, plant types, and spacing needs, then gives you a realistic number of plants you can grow without turning your backyard into a botanical battle zone. It’s free. No sign-up. No ads. Just plug in your numbers and go.

Key Features

  • Simple input for garden dimensions—feet or meters, your call.
  • Choose from common vegetables, herbs, and flowers with pre-set spacing recommendations.
  • Adjust spacing manually if you’re going for intensive planting or companion gardening.
  • See how many plants fit in rows, blocks, or square-foot layouts.
  • Get a printable planting plan you can tape to your shed door.
  • Works on your phone, tablet, or that old laptop you keep around for gardening notes.

FAQ

Can I use this for container gardening?
Yeah, sort of. Just measure your container’s surface area and treat it like a small garden bed. The calculator doesn’t account for depth, though—so if you’re growing deep-rooted stuff like carrots, make sure your pots are deep enough. Don’t blame the tool if your carrots come out looking like shoelaces.

What if I want to grow something not on the list?
No problem. Pick the closest match in terms of spacing, or just enter your own numbers. I didn’t include every heirloom tomato or rare herb—this isn’t a botanical database. It’s a helper, not a dictator.
